Post Wedding Brunch Recap

Aside from BlogHer madness, I've also been in the midst of wedding festivity planning for my cousin. In a cruel twist of fate BlogHer, our five-year wedding anniversary and my cousin's wedding ran in three consecutive weekends. So we've not been busy. At all.

Ahem, can you read through to the sarcasm?

Once pulling myself out of the BlogHer daze, I told the Husband to put the anniversary on pause until Labor Day weekend because I had a Post Wedding Brunch to prepare. Shout out to the husband for crafting on our anniversary weekend!

Along with my mom, aunt and cousins, we hosted a brunch the Sunday following the wedding. Many guests traveled to town, so it was the perfect opportunity for them to drop in, grab some coffee and a home-cooked meal before hitting the road.

We setup the brunch in a series of bars: biscuit and casserole bar, yogurt bar and last but not least cereal bar. I loved the way the brunch turned out. My mom's house just so happens to be filled with bright, beautiful colors and was essentially a decoration in itself. A few chevron runners, mason jars and floral arrangements and we called it a day!

As you entered, we had our hot bar featuring breakfast casserole, southwestern grits, biscuits and country ham. We hit a last minute shock when realizing country ham doesn't come cooked and one must actually cook the ham. No-one knew how to cook the ham!

Grandmother to the rescue, we had an impromptu lesson in cooking country ham. Crisis averted and biscuit bar successful!

Along with our fruit we offered a full on yogurt bar with berries, granola and a M&M's. When my aunt first put out the M&M's I thought, what the?! But the kids loved it! Hell, who are we kidding, I loved it!

My favorite setup had to be the muffins and cereal bar. There were knowingly going to be a handful of children attending the brunch, my wild toddler included, so we needed a kid-friendly station. I saw the kids running back to this bar more than anything else that morning. Fruit Loops were clearly a big hit.

The wedding is officially behind us, the newlyweds have returned from their honeymoon, and our family is certainly blessed for our newest addition.

Also? We had our very first real babysitter experience over the weekend. Milestone! Details to come!

I've been stirring a bit internally since returning home from BlogHer. I needed a new project, a new thing to share with this community, something wholly inspiring. Many texts, emails, and synonym searches later, my sweet friend Sarah of It's a Vol! and I are excited to officially announce Life Created Tuesdays, a weekly link party!
Day after day we work in big and little ways to create our every day joys. We want to see what inspires you, from the apple crisp baking in the oven to the toddler craft you finally accomplished to the bathroom remodel you've almost finished. Let's encourage one another in a creative life, one project at a time.

Advocate For Mom

As my RSS feed filled with Breast is Best mantra's this month, I'm feeling compelled to put a bit of a different message out there today. So, go with me on this, please.

World Breastfeeding Week is held August 1-7, so naturally many of you fabulous mamas boasted something you've chosen for your family, something you believe is best, something you've worked hard to do as a mother: breastfeed.

But then there's the other side to the breastfeeding discussion: formula and the mamas who use it not just to supplement but around the clock. I was this mom, and if we have another babe I'll likely be that mom again.

As much flack as breastfeeding moms may receive for feeding in public, formula feeding 
moms are catching just as much flack. I've become overly concerned by a vital pattern in this judging. You see, formula feeding moms are being judged not by outsiders of the mom community but by mothers themselves.

The breastfeeding community seems to be a tight-knit one and Lord knows to make it through that journey you likely need abundant support. However, shame as opposed to support is being given to those choosing to formula feed and often this shame is being brought on by other mothers.


This, my friends, is no small matter.




From the moment a nurse confirms your pregnancy something in you is changed as a woman; you're now a mother. And in that instant you begin to consult every book, every expert and even Dr. Google to ensure your child is given the best shot at this life.

Every mother is faced with the decision: breast v formula. Most of us throw caution to the wind and give it a go, others know from day one breastfeeding is not for them, and some have been waiting for the day they could nurse their child through breastfeeding. Every mom is different, every perspective is different and every mother's choice is her own to make. 

So why the internal mom-fight over breast and formula feeding?

If you're a breastfeeding 
mom, I applaud you. But today, I'm here to show outward support for those who choose to formula feed. 



There is no shame in choosing to formula feed. There is no reason or excuse you should have to give as to why you don't breastfeed. There is no person other than you, your partner and your pediatrician who can determine what is truly best for your child when it comes to feeding. There is no shame.

We're told of the ramifications of opting for formula as soon as that little line turns pink. From the most extreme accusations of formula ingredients, to sheer scolding of mothers for being lazy on the breastfeeding front, women who formula feed their children are at no less scrutiny than those who breastfeed. 

The day I sat on our couch in tears, some crazy contraption suctioned to my boob, and a screaming baby who didn't want to latch I had an epiphany: I am no good to him if I cannot hold my emotions together. I am no good to him if he cannot be properly fed. I am no good to him if I keep asserting all of my mental and physical efforts toward breastfeeding. 

In that moment, my husband handed me a bottle of Similac Sensitive and we never looked back. In my mind I thought I'd try again when my milk came in and my engorged self needed some soothing, but the milk never came. Not a single drop. No wonder my child wouldn't latch, there was nothing to be had. And truthfully, I half expected this as many women who've had breast reductions aren't able to breastfeed. I am one of those women; I am one of those moms.



The thing of it is, I went around that first year pleading this explanation to breastfeeding moms to ward off their judgment and side stares. But really? They did not need or deserve my explanation because I did what was best for me and my child just as every mother is expected to do.

Formula feeding moms, I'm here to tell you it's okay and your child still has a very bright future.

To my brother's embarrassment, I'm going to use him as my shining example of a formula fed child 23 years in the making. My mom formula fed my brothers, they're twins. Over the last 23 years each of them have pummeled through every stereotype a formula fed child has placed upon them. 



Above is Jackson with his Uncle T. He has had no failure to thrive. He has been the smartest in his class since elementary school. He has never known a GPA lower than 3.9. He has an insanely strong immune system. He has excelled in sports across the board. He has been chosen as "best looking" among his peers. He has grown into a healthy, thriving, academically intelligent young man entering his second year of med school. And to think, his mother formula fed him!

Moms of the world, formula feeding or not, this is your choice. Do not feel pressured by society into something that is not meant for you or your child. Find what is best for your family and run with it. I promise you'll be a better mother for it.

I want to close out this topic by quoting a Babble article from 2006 which debunked several formula-feeding stereotypes and brought this breast v formula debate to light in a productive manner:

How about this? Let’s agree that breastfeeding is ideal. Let’s agree that public policies and workplaces should support it better. But let’s also acknowledge that bottle-feeding moms need encouragement too. Cruelty helps no one – not babies, not moms. Imagine if we took half the energy we spend sniping at the formula crowd and turned it, instead, toward making it easier for women who breastfeed to keep their jobs, and for women who formula-feed to keep their dignity.

BBQ Beef Sliders Recipe

Tracking down the most satisfying weeknight meal is a challenge I faced and accepted long ago. When juggling the many roles we have as mothers, there is absolutely no time to mess around with a less-than satisfactory meal. Those brief moments we get to tempt our tastebuds are swiftly interrupted by tornadic toddlers, so we better make each bite count. Am I right?

Over the last few months, I've been perfecting these BBQ Beef Sliders and it seems no matter what the day, they're going to be gobbled up! The meat is bursting with flavor thanks to the Kraft Fresh Take mix, and the bacon crumbles just sear in that southern BBQ flavor. 

These BBQ Beef Sliders are a must try. And with only a 30-45 minute prep to serve time, even the busiest of mamas can take the time for these tasty sliders!

BBQ Beef Sliders recipe


BBQ Beef Sliders
adapted by Food Family Finds

Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 Kraft Fresh Take Smokey Mesquite BBQ variety package
1 egg
⅓ pound bacon, chopped
¼ cup Kraft Hickory BBQ sauce
3 slices cheddar cheese
12 Hawaiian Rolls
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a lipped baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Pour the Kraft Fresh Take bag into a medium mixing bowl. Using your hands to mix the bag contents, ground beef and egg until evenly distributed.
  3. Roll the mixture into 1-1/2 to 2 inch meatballs and space evenly on the baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes.
  4. While the meatballs are baking, fry the bacon until crispy over medium-high heat. Remove bacon from skillet, leaving the grease in the skillet. Chef's Note: I often life to fry the bacon a day ahead just for the sake of prep time.
  5. Cut rolls in half and add one meatball to the bottom portion of each roll then brush the tops with BBQ sauce. Add cheese slices then layer on top the bacon bits. 
  6. Place under the broiler (on low) next to the roll tops for 2-4 minutes until cheese is melted.
  7. Top the meatballs with the rolls, serve and enjoy!

First Day of School Printables

Jackson has been a daycare tot from ten-weeks old, but as he nears three we're considering enrolling him into a K-3 program at a local private school. The reality that my baby will be using these printables in the blink of an eye is absolutely surreal. 

I think for every parent there is a love-hate relationship with Summer, but the school year still gets every mama excited for the smell of fresh packs of notebooks, pencils and school supply galore. Even us daycare moms!

Green Giant Veggie Chips: The Healthier Chip.

A long day; a glass of wine; a toddler who is finally asleep. This is my happy place.  The day is winding down, I can high-five my Husband for still having a few shreds of sanity left and enjoy the fleeting few moments of the day.

That's when it hits: my salty cravings. I've had this salty craving since high school. It's a curse I tell you, and at this season in life who am I to refuse a good craving?

So, I stroll to the pantry in search of something suitable. Not too guilt-inducing, but it's got to hit the spot. Lately, that hit-the-spot snack has been lacking in excitement. And then, as I stared at some unappealing rice cakes in the snack aisle I came upon the Green Giant Veggie Chips.

I did a double take wondering when Green Giant arrived with a brand of chips and so thankful for a new munching option. Can you imagine, a healthier chip choice? Here it is, y'all!

In testing out these chips, I made one fatal mistake though: I shared them with my family.
And my toddler? He was a chip hog.

I did thankfully manage to sneak these chips away for some personal snacking before the toddler devoured them all. Between Jackson and Brandon these Green Giant Veggie Chips were gone in the matter of a day. We tested out the Multigrain Sweet Potato BBQ and Roasted Veggie Tortilla Garden Chips to kick off our new chip addiction.

As Brandon put it: they're going to put the other chip people out of business. 

The Multigrain Sweet Potato BBQ were certainly a chip of their own, and right on track with my Husband's current sweet potato obsession. The texture was nice and the flavor not too powerful.

The Roasted Veggie Tortilla Garden Chip on the other hand at first presented itself as a replica of another popular cool ranch chip. But upon further taste testing, the flavor of these easily won out over my previous ranch chip munchies.

S'mores Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars #Recipe

Girl Scout events are easily my first memories of S'more making. Or, maybe it was summer camp...At this point so many of those memories are beginning to run together. Ahem, quarter-life crisis.

What I do know, is that you just can't go wrong with graham crackers, marshmallow and Hershey's chocolate squares. National S'mores Day is actually happening this Saturday, August 10. How could a foodie not honor such a worthy holiday?!

Here's the catch, August is by far one of our hottest months. So, I'm not quite itching to start up a fire and roast some marshmallows. In order to honor this holiday (because how could you not?!) I've been on the search for some campfire-not-needed S'mores recipes.

I'll have you know, Pinterest is full of S'more inspired ideas. This S'mores Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar recipe has had my taste buds dancing since first pin. Rather than prodding at a fire all afternoon, I managed to satisfy our S'mores craving with just a 30 minute stint in the kitchen!

S'mores Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars #recipe


S'mores Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars
recipe from Say Yes to Hoboken

Ingredients:
Graham Crackers
Cookie Dough
4 bars Hershey's Bars
1 bag Mini Marshmallows

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 
2. Layer bottom of pan with graham crackers. 
3. Roll out cookie dough onto parchment paper. Then flip rolled dough over onto the graham crackers. 
Bake the graham cracker and cookie dough layer for 10 minutes or until cooked almost through.
4. Remove from oven and cover with Hershey's bars. Then layer on the bag of mini marshmallows. 
5. Finish by placing the layered dish into the oven on Lo broil for several minutes. *please watch this closely as every oven will broil at different rates.
