On Goal Setting & My 2014 Word of the Year

I spent my last hours of 2013 digging through old posts on this blog, remembering the good the bad and the soul-stirring moments of the year. I have never, ever gone into a year as motivated as I am 2014.

Last year, my word of the year, if you will, was "inspired." Inspired by the gift of life, the light we can carry and the choices we can make to form a happy life. What followed in 2013 was a lot of nitty gritty real life. A lot of work. A lot of parenting. A lot of financial trials. Most of all though, 2013 came with a whole lot of grace, answered prayers and a really great outlook for our family.

So, what does this mean for my 2014? It means my heart is fired up and as such I'm choosing Intentional as my 2014 word of the year.

Before I go any further, I'm going to send you Lara Casey's direction. I found this fabulous lady through InstaGram, and am thankful each and every time I visit her blog. She's the founder of Southern Weddings, has a shop filled with beautiful items and just kicked off her 2014 Goal Setting Series. It's not too late to join in yourself! Find details on her blog!

In these first few steps of goal setting, Lara asks you to list out what worked in 2013, what didn't work, what you learned from what worked and what didn't, what fires us up and what our visions are for 2014. Whew! These are no small tasks my friends.

As I sat in reflection over these goal setting steps my heart kept coming back to my walk with Christ. I began 2013 hopeful for those 365 days, and by the time we rang in 2014 I was more full of faith than ever before. If any year presented opportunities to break down, to rattle my faith, to question the goodness of our world it was 2013. It was a raw year, but rather than take to the toxic, I was thankful He stood with me and strengthened me in this season.

So, my #1 thing that worked in 2013? Spending time each morning with His word. My house is still a mess, my to-do list still has items on repeat and extra patience is not miraculously provided but my heart is still & filling up with so much good in taking ten to twenty minutes with a bit a scripture and devotionals each morning.

What didn't work in 2013? Straying from time with His word. I found if I went days without those ten to twenty minutes, the days became more chaotic. More importantly, my heart became more static. Wild how that works.

My vision for 2014? I want a happier house. More laughter, less worry. I want to be intentional with parenting, marriage, work, friendships & family and stepping out of comfort zones. I want credit card debt free in 2014, and working down student loans. Top of my list, I want us to be intentional about seeking Christ as a family.

It's going to be a great year full of new opportunity. I for one am not going to let the days of 2014 slip by in a blink.

How about you? Are you choosing a word of the year? I'd love for you to share it (or your blog post links) in the comments so I can share in your year!
